10 War Books Everyone Should Read

34
Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Happy Tuesday everyone! How are you all doing? Well I'm pretty great, university work is getting stressful but I'm down to my last two assignments so I'm happy about that.

Today's TTT I've decided to share with you my top war books that I feel that everyone should read, and I mean they're all brilliant in my eyes and I hope that if you haven't tried some of them that you might be persuaded to...

Carrie's War by Nina Bawden

A book I read back in junior school that will stay with me forever, about a young girl named Carrie and her brother Nick who are evacuated to the countryside to escape war- a classic war story!

Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks

Young Englishman Stephen is sent to the north of France in 1910 and stays with the Azaire family who he soon finds to be falling in love with the unhappily married, Isabelle. With the brink of war in sight, Stephen volunteers to fight leaving Isabelle behind.

I
Atonement by Ian McEwan

In the summer of 1934 thirteen year-old Briony Tallis witnesses her older sister Cecelia take off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house in front of Robbie Turner, a family friend. By the end of the day their lives will have changed forever...

Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo

Tommo Peaceful is recalling his childhood in one night amongst the battlefields of France. He remembers everything, from his first day of school, the death of his father, and the only girl in his life Molly and how Charlie somehow took her away from him. But as War is declared himself and Charlie had to grow up fast...

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

It's just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery...

War Brides by Helen Bryan

It's 1939 and as Britain prepares for war with Germany, the lives of five young women are about to collide in the sleepy Sussex village of Crowmarsh Priors. Although at home, the war is close by...

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

Joey is a warhorse, but he wasn't always. Once he was a farm horse and a gentle boy named Albert was his master. Then World War I came storming through and everything changed. Albert's father sells Joey to the army where the beautiful, red-bay horse is trained to charge the enemy, drag heavy artillery, and carry wounded soldiers not much older than Albert off of battlefields...

Goodnight Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian

Willie Beech, a timid 9-year-old, is evacuated from Deptford to Sussex, and is billeted on Tom Oakley, a widower who has allowed himself to become bitter and misanthropic since his wife and child died of scarlet fever 40 years before...

The Diary of Young Girl by Anne Frank

This diary of the young innocent girl who amongst many Jews was sent to a concentration camp during the Second World War. This diary follows a part of her life before this atrocious part of history, she shares the worries of any girl her age and not just hiding from the Germans. Like any diary she talks of; boys, school, family, books and with her witty sense of humour and bright spirit it's hard not to wonder what she could have been like if she escaped the Holocaust. A remarkable young girl.

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Marie- Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighbourhood so she can memorise it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure's reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum's most valuable and dangerous level...

These are my favourite war books to date and I have SO many more that I'm yet to read, and I'm so glad I have a particular genre I'm never going to get bored of. What war books have you enjoyed? Maybe I haven't read them so recommendations are always welcome!

I hope you're all having a great week so far.

Hugs and love,
